The team communicates our strategic agenda to everyone who works here and all external audiences – it’s at the heart of their work. It also looks after communications in areas such as taxation, strategic planning and housing, as well as libraries and customer services. Media relations are part of the team’s brief, as is communications for the Chief Executive and the organisation’s transformation. Increasingly, and progressively, it’s delivered with and alongside partner organisations.

People team

The People team communicates all aspects of the Council’s business relating to health, social care, education and services for children and families. Their priorities include recruiting foster carers, encouraging people to look at careers in teaching, and encouraging healthy and active lifestyles. Health and social care integration is a key area where the team works alongside partners in the NHS and the voluntary sector. On the employee communications side, they keep the Council’s social care staff – the largest part of our workforce – in touch with business developments to help them deliver vital services to our most vulnerable residents.

Place team

Highways, transport, waste management and disposal, planning, the economy, arts and culture and the community, as well as community safety, make up a broad portfolio of comms activities for the Place team. They work alongside key contractors in both the highways and the waste arenas. Award-winning campaigns to tackle domestic abuse are just one example of work delivered in partnership with the police and other councils. It shows just how much collaboration and innovation are the way forward for Essex.

Channels and Digital team

We want to be a digital leader by 2021, and we’ve started already. The team manages a variety of channels – from a weekly employee email newsletter, through social media engagement to keeping information up to date on Essex County Council websites. We take a ‘digital by design’ approach and the team are always on the lookout for opportunities to improve communication with our internal and external audiences. It’s all about engagement, so the team regularly evaluate data to understand levels of engagement for different audiences and how these can be increased.

Marketing and Brand team

This small, centralised team has a broad remit. They provide expert branding, corporate, campaign and commercial design solutions, as well as supporting our trading services with insight-led marketing communications. These services are vital as they generate new revenue to close the funding gap and support the delivery of front line council services. They include areas such as Adult Community Learning, Essex Education Services, Essex Legal Services, Essex Outdoors, Place Services and Country Parks. In terms of the people themselves, the team has marketing, communications and design professionals with in-house and agency experience, and from backgrounds covering the public, charity and commercial sectors.
