From cycle paths to recycling centres, we want to help the county thrive and succeed as a great place to live and work. You could fit in perfectly at Highways and Waste.

Essex County Council has one of the largest highway networks in the country - some 5,000 miles of roads and around 5,000 miles of footways – and we’re responsible for maintaining it. We also operate contracts to manage the treatment and disposal of mainly household waste collected by the district, borough and city councils in Essex and Southend.

Integrated Waste Management

Essex Highways

We deal with road maintenance, street lighting, drainage and flooding, winter travel, road safety, traffic management, highway development, some bridges and structures, grass and vegetation, bus stops and bus shelters, and roads strategies right across the county.

Integrated Waste Management

Essentially, we’re responsible for disposing and treating household waste, operating 32 recycling centres for household waste, managing several old landfill sites in Essex, and waste education and prevention activities.

This includes black bag/bin waste (residual), green garden waste, food waste and mixed food and green waste. Dry recycling collections (paper, plastic, metal, etc.) waste is handled by the waste collection authorities. We also manage contracts with composting facilities, anaerobic digestion plants, landfill sites and a mechanical biological treatment facility.
