We are looking for a Youth Work Team Leader for our Youth Work in Hospitals Project. The successful candidate will play a key role in developing the Youth Service offer by working with identified Young People who present at Basildon A&E for various issues. The Team Leader will provide support to young people in the Hospital and upon discharge in the local community.

The Hospital project supports young people aged 13-19yrs (up to 25yrs SEND), who present at the A&E department. The role requires the successful candidate to provide impartial advice and guidance for the young person to progress and develop effectively, as well as engage/re-engage with services that offer holistic support. You will also be required to support young people to fulfil their potential and access universal services through managing a caseload of young people whilst engaging them in mentoring and reintegration work.

You will work face to face with young people across South Essex and provide information and support. You will use your creativity to engage them in positive activities which will help them to over come challenges in their life to reach their full potential. You will support the delivery of a group work session specifically for young people signed up for support from the project.

Key Accountabilities

  • Support the development and delivery of the Hospital Project, including completing assessments, covering 3-4 hospital shifts a week in the A&E department and attending and contributing to team meetings and quarterly reports.
  • Work with young people who present with a variety of needs to enable them to progress and develop.
  • Responsible for managing a defined caseload of young people to establish their needs and offer intervention in line with external contracts and create, maintain and review accuracy of records in conjunction with DfE guidance and that of external funders, whilst ensuring compliance with Information Sharing Protocols.
  • Working in collaboration with stakeholders, including senior school-based staff, social care, SEND, Youth Offending Service, Housing and partner agencies, to provide wider support to young people to remove barriers to development.
  • Responsible for ensuring compliance with statutory requirements, including data management, equality and diversity legislation and ensure arrangements are in place to effectively manage concerns and complaints.
  • Thinking creatively, challenging the norms, and constructively challenging those around you to ensure continuous improvement.
  • Ensure the proper assessment, management and mitigation of risk, including Health and Safety and Business Continuity
  • Work as part of a team, to ensure young people’s needs are at the forefront of all project delivery

Role Specific Accountabilities:

  • Develop and deliver a programme of imaginative activities, encouraging the active participation and involvement of young people in developing their skills, understanding of others and the world around them within the project. Ensuring that young people and staff are fully involved in this process
  • Facilitate young people’s learning and understanding of their personal and social development in accordance with the core values of youth work
  • Work 1:1 with young people in a variety of settings to build and maintain professional relationships
  • To manage your own working hours (Flexible working) in accordance to the needs of the project and young people
  • Keep accurate and efficient administrative systems and record keeping
  • Provide information and data as required
  • Take part in the Service supervision scheme and performance management scheme to identify priorities and learning needs.
  • Ensure Child Protection/ Safeguarding Guidelines (SET) are followed and that all concerns are reported promptly
  • Comply with individual responsibilities for staff and young people, in accordance with work role, for health and safety in the workplace

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • A nationally recognised JNC qualification in youth support work, minimum Level 2 (QCF, VRQ, NVQ or Local) with a willingness to undertake a relevant level three qualification
  • Evidence of recent continuous professional development.
  • Experience of working with innovative, social education programmes.
  • Ability to develop work with young people to achieve planned outcomes.
  • Experience of effective use of resources
  • Experience of successfully involving young people in decision making processes.
  • Knowledge and experience of youth work methods and techniques.
  • Excellent level of numeracy, literacy (GCSE A – C or equivalent or demonstrable experience) and good IT skills.
  • The job role requires you to be mobile throughout an operational area. Access to a vehicle is essential.
