Please note this role will involve working weekends on a rota basis with pay enhancement.

The Transport Co-ordinator will provide a helpful, courteous and professional service to support the Recycling Centres for Household Waste (RCHW) operations. The role will manage logistical transport planning and maintain fleet/driver documentation in accordance with ECC policy and operating licence requirements.

The key role of the coordinator will be to plan vehicle routing and maintain a driver rota for a 7 day a week operations to ensure container collections from the RCHWs and transfer arrangements into Essex County Council’s contracted disposal and reprocessing facilities.

The transport coordinator shall oversee all aspects of daily vehicle management, including safety, training and work with administration teams to book and record maintenance activities.

Role Responsibilities

· Lead on vehicle routing and ensure that staffing rotas are optimised to minimise road miles and driver hours. Responsible for forecasting of haulage servicing requirements for weekends, bank holidays and other peak periods.

  • Drive HGV class 2 vehicles as and when required.

· Manage daily driver debriefs, tool box talks and gate checks.

· Liaison with RCHW managers, supervisors, staff and drivers to ensure an efficient service which is cost effective and minimises disruption.

· Producing accurate drivers’ sheets, extract data, record to monitor effectiveness.

· Assisting the Transport Manager to keep statutory compliance files up to date and in accordance with ECC and operating licence requirements.

· Daily monitoring of the defect reports, near miss or accident reporting. Assisting with accident/investigations through technical knowledge. Managing breakdowns/punctures and liaise with maintenance providers as required

· Assist in the production of annual budgets and monitoring, managing and monitor tachograph usage, fuel purchases and usage.

· Support the Development of fleet maintenance calendar to ensure existing routing is not adversely affected.

· To carry out any other duties commensurate with the post as required to meet the needs of the service.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience:

Qualifications/Training – Minimum GCSE (or equivalent) in English and Maths or suitable experience

· HGV Class 2 driving licence is essential

· CPC (Certificate of Professional Competence) is desirable but not essential

· IOSH (Institute of Occupational Safety and Health) is desirable but is not essential

Knowledge – Working knowledge of waste and recycling operations. knowledge of all legislative/regulatory requirements for HGV’s. IT literate and experienced in preparing and delivering reports

Experience – Fleet compliance and logistic planning experience within Waste Industry. Experience of people and health and safety management. Experience of vehicle management.

Skills – Good management skills, including both motivation and disciplinary skills. Strong financial acumen. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including formal presentation and documentation skills. Ability to prioritise

Character – Resilient, able to absorb pressure and respond positively. Good communication, interpersonal and people management skills, professional, confident, flexible and positive. Strong work ethic

Availability/Locality/Mobility – Remote working not possible. Must be able to attend site or other locations, as required and able to work overtime where required.

Shift Pattern/Rota – Weekend working on a rota with the Fleet Controller will be essential to ensure a 7 day operation is maintained.
