About the Role
North Essex covers our offices in Colchester, Clacton and the greater Tendring area. It is a diverse area to work in encompassing rural, coastal, and urban communities all with their own unique challenges.
Occupational Therapists, working for ECC undertake a range of assessments, interventions, and support for the residents of Essex, with a focus on occupation, activity, choice and control. To empower the residents to achieve their functional goals and aspirations the OTs use a strengths-based approach, utilising appropriate community assets, and provide appropriate adaptations and equipment.
The core areas that OTs provide skilled support, interventions and advice are: moving and handling; major adaptations; complex equipment needs; and developing functional outcomes. OTs also undertake related aspects of social care work, such as safeguarding, mental capacity and best interest assessments, care and support planning and ensuring the appropriate support from other agencies is in place or available.
Our OTs work in teams with social workers and community support workers. MDT working is important, and the ability to be able to provide information, advice and guidance from an OT perspective to the MDT team is an important skill required of all our OTs.
Whilst you may not have the skills or experience in all of these areas, Essex has good training opportunities, and also a very supportive group of OTs, good reflective supervision, all of which would help you develop your occupational therapy skills, knowledge and capabilities.
This opportunity sits within our Discharge to Assess team. The team operate on a 7-day rota and will involve weekend and bank holiday working (1 weekend in 6). In addition to the basic salary the role comes with an additional 6% flat rate allowance.

To apply, you’ll need a degree or diploma in Occupational Therapy, or equivalent qualification, with current Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) registration. As, as a subject matter expert in relevant professional practice, you should have a comprehensive understanding of current legislation, regulations, and guidance.
You’ll also bring:
- Evidence of continuing professional development and capability of practice in accordance with current professional standards.
- An in-depth understanding of the financial implications of commissioned care packages.
- The ability to make clear decisions, to highlight and limit potential risks associated with intervention.
This role involves travelling around Essex. A driving licence and car - or the ability to meet the mobility requirements of the role through other means - is essential.
As part of employment with Essex County Council (ECC) should your role require a DBS check you will be required to register with the DBS update service.
